I’m not offended by the sight of a girl in her knickers, and have no problem with photos of same appearing on album covers. The boobs on the cover of Roxy Music’s early records tie in perfectly with the themes covered therein, and the design collective Hipgnosis pulled some brilliantly interesting, surreal tricks with nudity back in their heyday.

Unfortunately the cover for Two Door Cinema Club’s second album possesses none of the ingenuity, wry humour, or artistry of any of the aforementioned LP covers. I’m flabbergasted by their decision to put such a drear image on the cover of Beacon. Especially considering that a large proportion of their fanbase is made up of teenage girls. Objectify, boys!

Perhaps they think it’s clever, a knowing nod to the 70s whilst also incorporating the kitsch housewife imagery that’s become popular in recent years thanks to Mad Men and Tumblr. Maybe it’s a sexy homage to the part in The Wrong Trousers where Wallace puts his trousers on by falling through a specially enabled hole in the ceiling. Maybe it’s their way of saying that they think the sun shines out of their respective girlfriends’ bums and that they are drawn to this light in a lighthouse or beacon-like fashion— oh yes that is clever. Or it could be a tribute to Lindsay Lohan’s “firecrotch” years (tribute albums to Lohan not being an unknown quantity: The Blow made one after all).

Whatever it is, they’ve failed dramatically with this puerile, shiny reinforcement of the lamentably not-dead-yet Brit indie boys club which only serves to reduce women— their girlfriends, female fans and followers— down to objects of sexual and satisfactory form. It’s seriously poor form at that.
