Getting back into the game with two quick notes on “Infinity Guitars”, which I’ve been enjoying immensely over the last few days:

  • I love the way Alexis Krauss spits out “Dumb whores / best friends!” a couple times in this song. The first two words are totally snarled and stuffed to the brim with attitude, and then “Best friends!” sounds confident and even a little defiant. It’s like she’s daring people to talk shit and then laughing it off in the manner of a supremely self-assured schoolgirl. I suppose that pairs well with the song’s sprightly playground bounce.
  • I remember fighting video game boss battles as a kid where I’d seemingly vanquish the foe, only to have him/her/it return in a glorious, dramatic fashion, always deformed and awfully intimidating. “Infinity Guitars” is the musical equivalent of those boss battles. The volume and intensity remain at manageable levels for 3/4 of the song, and then everything collapses into itself and blooms once again, gnarled and supermassive. It sounds the song’s first two minutes are being sucked into a jet engine, fired out like bits of shrapnel, and pieced back together for one final showdown. It’s a very cool effect.

Jamieson puts in to words better than I ever could “That Fucking Awesome Thing That Happens in the Final Third of Infinity Guitars”. It wasn’t in the demo version and when “Treats” came out I remember listening to all the tracks that hadn’t appeared in demo form first, so when I finally got around to listening to the album version of Infinity Guitars, that moment (can we call it a drop? I think we can call it a drop) blew my head up, in a very, very good way.
